The Dalaran Book of Spells[]

Basic Edition.

Welcome aspiring mage, you have taken your first step to acquiring great knowledge and mastering untold power.

In this tome you will find a number of spells with descriptions and full details on how to cast them. Be aware that it is prudent that all students are to learn the theory before they begin casting spells, I therefore highly recommend you read the Schools of Arcane to familiarise yourself with the technical jargon in this tome. Other books depicting the origins of arcane, it’s history of usage and the mystical substance known as Mana would also be advised.

A note of caution when practising spells, magic is highly unpredictable and very dangerous, I therefore advise you to not get ahead of yourself, start from the very beginning of this book before you tackle the more difficult spells. Don’t run before you can crawl. If you are practising spells outside the classroom then ensure you follow all safety procedures (e.g. ensure you are at least fifty yards from flammable materials, pregnant women, etc).

Above all else act sensibly.

I wish to congratulate you on selecting this Kirin Tor certificated spell book to aid you with your studies.

Good luck.

Professor Nelson DeBreton.

Abjuration.[]

We shall begin with abjuration. As depicted in Schools of Arcane, abjuration is the art of protecting oneself from harm through magical means. The most basic selection of spells used in abjuration are the elemental wards. Elemental wards are a very thin layer of arcane energy that can surround the caster for a brief period of time (a note that they are not infact actual elemental powers but arcane taking the form of such. For a full explanation see The Elemental Arcane.) These wards can protect the caster from either himself or others from elemental attacks. These can include spells, elemental entities or enchantments. Depending on the strength they will range from weakening the effect, absorbing the full force or even deflecting entirely back at the attacker.

There are two mainstream wards used by everyday mages which are the fire and frost wards. To cast the ward you must have focus the arcane energies around yourself while concentrating on the elemental entities. You must then utter the following incantations.

Fire Ward: Pyro-Protus Warda

Frost Ward: Cryo-Protus Warda

If successful this should conjure a very weak transparent shield taking on the form of either fire or frost which will last several seconds, it will then disappear but leave an invisible charm upon you.

Once warding has been successfully mastered, the next spell that all student mages must learn is the mana shield. The mana shield is a much more powerful form of a ward in which it actual forms a protective shell around the caster that can repel anything from physical attacks to spells. Using the same method as warding you are still projecting a field of energy around your body, however you are maintaining the effect as well as the spell requiring much energy making it much more difficult. Once you have focused your mind you must speak this incantation.

Mana Shield: Abjura-Protus Armora.

This spell requires complete focus from the start but once you have begun to successfully maintain the shield you can eventually move with the shield still surrounding you.

This spell is one of the more difficult for a beginner to cast, practise by casting wards without the elemental effect and attempt to widen the surface area and maintain the spell.

Conjuration[]

Once you have successfully mastered the art of protecting yourself you can begin moving onto conjuring. The art of conjuring is the ability to summon or create living or inanimate objects through the usage of arcane. A coveted and enviable trait of any mage is the ability to conjure food and water.

The method of conjuring is simple, you must envisage the object of your desire and focus arcane energy to bring it into existence. There are of course many different varieties of bread and water ( to find out why we only conjure simple food products read The Arcane Ethics: A Guide to Being a Magical Charity) which means that the incantations can be slightly different.

The main phrase is Conjura

This is the focus word during a conjure spell, while using this you can experiment with various other words to tailor your own end result. For the purposes of the main exam a simple loaf of bread and glass of mineral water is required.

We will begin with the bread loaf.

Loaf of Bread: Conjura Cerealis

The mineral water is much more difficult as you are not only conjuring a liquid but a second set of particles being the glass.

Glass of Mineral Water: Conjura Aqua-Vitreus

Remember to concentrate on the glass and water being separate particles but the water still being inside the glass vessel.

Transmutation[]

A large school of magic is the art of transmutation, the ability to change time and space. For the purpose of this book I shall split it into three sub schools. The first being transfiguration (the ability to change the shape of inanimate objects), transmogrification (the ability to change the shape of living creatures) and chronomancy (the ability to change time).

Transfiguration follows the same methods as conjuring as you must focus on a new object in your mind while keeping the existing object in view. For beginners, the best way to train is to transform similar shaped items, for example a red ball into a red apple. However for the exam you will be asked to change almost anything into… almost anything. Therefore you must master the technique and usage of the incantation.

The focus word is Poly-Morphus (this is where the colloquial term known as polymorphing comes from). Again as with conjuring the incantation will be different for each transmutation you make. An example for transforming into an apple would be:

Poly-Morphus Appla

The same incantation can be used on any object, obviously the larger or difference in weight, texture or colour will require more energy and for you to focus more.

Once you have learnt how to transform inanimate objects you can move onto living creatures. Transmogrification is effectively the same as transfiguration, however with inanimate objects there lacks a resistance so transformations can often be permanent. The will of a living creature is strong enough to dispel any transformation so therefore transfiguration rarely lasts long. Be aware that transfiguration is highly dangerous so you must use abjuration before practicing on yourself or others.

A common form of transmogrification is a spell that alters very little of the subject but gives extraordinary results. Neuromages developed a transmogrification spell that sharpens the synapses in the humanoid brain to allow a faster transfer of electrical impulses resulting in clearer thinking and improved logic. The spell was named Arcane Intellect, a charm that is said to improve the subjects IQ, however the effect often wears off after thirty minutes or so as the synapses repair themselves.

Although the spell alters little it is extremely dangerous if not performed correctly which could result in brain damage, I therefore reiterate the usage of abjuration before practicing this spell.

Begin by focusing on the subjects head and direct your energy to your finger tips, as the arcane power masses in your hand speak the incantation:

Arcane Intellect: Arcana-Intel Acies

This will release a charm above the subjects head giving the appearance of a blue eye. (It is advisable to practise on rodents before yourself or others to prevent comas)

The final spell I shall teach you in this basic section of transmogrification is the blink spell. Blinking is a minor teleportation spell under the chronomancy school of magic. It moves the caster a short distance forward, it is very useful for escaping dangerous situations or for students who are late for class.

Teleporting is the most dangerous of magical arts and requires mastery of the basic usage of transfiguration and transmogrification. There have been known cases of beginners who have teleported themselves into solid structures or even leaving limbs or other body parts behind. A properly cast mana shield can prevent any collisions and lesson the degree of damage should bodies become separated. To begin with an incantation can be learnt for blinking but to pass the exam you must do it silently (most spells can be performed silently but it is essential for blinking to make it effective).

To blink you must direct your vision forward and force yourself there through the power of the arcane, you then finally blink with your eyes to deliver a correct teleportation.

The incantation is as follows.

Blink: Instana Portus Metrum

Evocation[]

Evocation is the ability to summon pure energy and manipulate it into a destructive or benificial form. Typically the main usage is to conjure arcane energy and produce an offensive bolt, an effective battlemage must learn how to project bolts of elements and even the arcane.

There are two main forms of arcane elements used by mages. The first being the traditional school of cryomancy which is control of frost, ice and water magic. The second is the destructive force of pyromancy which is the usage of fire magic. Most mages choose either one or the other yet some decide to avoid both and stick with pure arcane. In this basic spell book I will teach three basic bolts of projection. The frost bolt, the fire bolt and the arcane missile. The method for each is the same yet with different incantations. As with the arcane intellect spell you direct your energy into your finger tips. For each bolt you must speak one of the following incantations:

Frost Bolt: Cryo-Boltus Projecta

Fire Ball: Pyro-Boltus Projecta

Arcane Missile: Arcana-Boltus Projecta

The frost and fire bolts will release a single ball of elemental energy that can be destructive to anything in its path. The same can be said for an arcane blast, yet because the missiles require less mana than the elemental projections it is possible to continue a steady stream of bolts if you channel your energy longer.
